Accra Batik Workshop — Make Your Own Adinkra Cloth
A hands-on, half-day batik workshop in Accra led by a practising Ghanaian batik artist. Choose your traditional Adinkra symbols, draw in hot wax with the tjanting tool, stamp bold repeat patterns, dye and layer colour, then watch your finished cloth revealed as the wax is removed — yours to take home. Available in two packages: meet at the studio, or full hotel pickup & drop-off. No experience needed.

Arrive at the studio (or, on Package B, be collected from your hotel). Welcome drink, aprons and gloves, and a studio safety orientation. The instructor shares the history of batik in West Africa and the wax-resist technique, then walks you through the available Adinkra, Kente, and Pan-African symbols — each explained by name, form, and meaning. You choose the symbols that resonate, and receive a symbol reference booklet.
Your pre-treated cotton fabric is secured and you lightly sketch your symbol layout. The instructor demonstrates the tjanting (brass-tipped wax pen) — you practise on a test strip, then trace your design in hot beeswax. Add bold repeat patterns with carved stamps (the cap technique), and create batik's signature crackle texture by scrunching the waxed cloth — as subtle or bold as you like.
Submerge the waxed fabric in the first dye vat from a palette of traditional batik colours, watching the design emerge. Apply a second wax layer and a second dye to build a multi-tonal, layered design (always working light to dark). Finally the cloth goes into hot water to melt away the wax — the reveal, where your full design appears at once. Rinsed and hung to dry.
All finished pieces are displayed together — share your design and the symbols you chose. A relaxed conversation on batik in contemporary Ghanaian fashion and how to care for your piece. Your batik is wrapped for take-home with your symbol booklet, and the instructor shares tips for sourcing batik materials in Accra. Package B guests are driven back to their accommodation.
Two packages, identical workshop experience — the difference is transport: Package A — Meet at Location: make your own way to the studio in Accra (taxi, ride-hail, or private car); no transport provided. Best for guests near central Accra or with their own transport, and the lower-priced option. Package B — Hotel Pickup & Drop-off: collected from your accommodation in a private A/C vehicle and returned door-to-door after the session. Ideal for visitors unfamiliar with Accra. Provide your hotel name and address at booking. Wear clothing you don't mind staining (aprons provided); closed-toe shoes recommended. Hot beeswax is used — the instructor demonstrates safe handling and supervises under-16s. Private group bookings (corporate, school, family, hen parties) available. Advance booking required — no walk-ins. Lunch is not included; the studio can recommend nearby restaurants.
