Vodun Festival 2027 — Togo & Benin
A once-in-a-lifetime journey to the Fête du Vodoun — celebrated on 10 January as a national public holiday in Benin and one of the most extraordinary spiritual events on earth. Over six days from Accra, travel through the fetish markets of Lomé, the stilt villages of Lake Nokoué, and the Sacred Forest and Python Temple of Ouidah, to the heart of the festival itself — rituals, drumming, masquerades, and ancestral celebrations performed for centuries. Pre-dawn pickup from your Accra hotel and cross into Togo at the Aflao–Cinkassé border (the guide handles all procedures). Tour Lomé: the Independence Monument, the renovated Palais de Lomé, and the vast Grand Marché of the Nana Benz traders. The day's highlight is the Akodessewa Fetish Market — the world's largest Voodoo market, with stalls of charms, talismans, and ritual objects and fetish priests on hand — a powerful prelude to the festival. After breakfast, a pirogue ride across Lake Togo reaches Togoville — where Chief Mlapa III signed the 1884 German protectorate agreement, and where Vodun shrines and a Catholic basilica stand side by side. Continue to Aného, Togo's former colonial capital, for the historic House of Slaves. Lunch en route, then cross the Hillacondji–Kraké border into Benin and drive to Cotonou. Check in (Night 2) and join the first of four nights of Cotonou's festival-season night life — guide accompanies; dinner at own arrangement.
Breakfast, then the Amazone Monument honouring the Agojie all-female warriors of Dahomey (of 'The Woman King' fame) and the open-air Graffiti Wall of Arts. Lunch in Cotonou. Reach Ganvié by pirogue — the 'Venice of Africa', a UNESCO stilt village of up to 30,000 on Lake Nokoué — where, in festival season, rare water-based Vodun rituals take place on the lake itself. Return for a second, electric festival-eve night in Cotonou (Night 3); guide accompanies; dinner at own arrangement.
The heart of the journey. Drive 45 minutes to Ouidah, the spiritual capital of Voodoo, on its national public holiday. Visit the Python Temple, where sacred royal pythons are revered and guests may hold them, and the Sacred Forest, alive with ceremonies, offerings, and rituals during the festival. Walk the 4km Route des Esclaves to the Door of No Return. Then experience the full Vodun Festival — Zangbeto and Egungun masquerades, sacred drumming, ancestral invocations, and devotees from across the global diaspora. Return to a festival night in Cotonou (Night 4); guide accompanies; dinner at own arrangement.
A lighter day after the festival. Drive east to Porto-Novo, Benin's capital, for the Royal Palace Museum (Musée Honmé), the Brazilian-style Grande Mosquée (1910), and the colonial quarter. Lunch in Porto-Novo, then an afternoon of beach relaxation on the Cotonou coast (follow the guide's advice on currents). The day closes with an included farewell group dinner, and one final night of Cotonou's lingering festival energy (Night 5).
Final breakfast and check-out, with time for last-minute shopping. Cross the Kraké–Hillacondji border back into Togo, drive the scenic coastal road, then cross the Cinkassé–Aflao border into Ghana — the guide assists at every crossing. A final 2.5–3 hour drive returns you to Accra for hotel drop-off. End of an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Vodun world.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL — The Fête du Vodoun is a living spiritual tradition, not a tourist performance. Expect Zangbeto 'guardians of the night' and Egungun ancestral masquerades, sacred drumming and chanting, ritual offerings, and Vodun priests leading ceremonies in full regalia, with thousands of practitioners from across the diaspora. RESPECTFUL ENGAGEMENT — Respectful, modest dress is required at all sacred sites (shoulders and knees covered at the Sacred Forest, Python Temple, and formal ceremonies). Photography guidelines apply at specific ceremonies — always ask the guide before pointing a camera; some rituals must not be photographed. Follow the guide's instructions at all times. IMPORTANT — Carry a valid passport or ECOWAS national ID and a yellow fever certificate at all times (mandatory at every border). ECOWAS citizens need no visa for Togo or Benin. West African CFA Francs (XOF) are required in both countries — bring the equivalent of at least GHS 1,500–2,000, with USD or Euros as backup. 10 January is a public holiday in Benin and Ouidah will be busy, so an early departure from Cotonou is essential. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
A scheduled group departure (7–12 January 2027) with limited places — early reservation is recommended. This is a 6-day, 3-country international trip: every guest must carry a valid passport or ECOWAS national ID card and a yellow fever vaccination certificate, mandatory at all four border crossings. Personal shopping, alcoholic drinks, dinners on Nights 1–4, travel insurance, and optional tips are not included.
