Hiking
Mount Gemi — Amedzofe Summit

One of Ghana's highest accessible peaks, rising above the town of Amedzofe at 611 metres. The climb is gentle — at a casual pace the summit is reached in about 20 minutes, making it approachable for most fitness levels. At the top stands a large metal cross, erected by German missionaries in 1939 to commemorate 50 years of Christian evangelism in the area. On clear days, sweeping views across the Volta Region reach as far as Togo, with Lake Volta visible in the distance. The mountain's original Ewe name was Gayito ("God of Defense"); "Gemi" comes from the German Evangelical Missions Institute (GEMI) inscribed on the cross — locals adopted it as it was easier to pronounce, and it remains a place of pilgrimage and prayer. Entry and local guide fee included.

Adventure

Walk a series of suspended bridges through the forest canopy of the Avatime hills for treetop views over the valley. A local guide accompanies the group throughout. Suitable for most guests; not recommended for anyone with a serious fear of heights. Entry fee included.

Amedzofe Waterfall

A guided forest descent from Amedzofe leads to a beautiful cascade in the Avatime hills. The pool is cool and refreshing — a rewarding place to rest and swim. Note the return is uphill, so take your time. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. Entry and guide fee included.

The village of Tafi Atome has protected its mona monkey population as sacred animals for generations. A local guide leads the group through the forest. Easy flat walk, suitable for all ages.

Return Drive to Accra & Hotel Drop-Off

Return drive from the Volta Region. Light refreshments and water in vehicle. Guests dropped at hotels late in the evening. Dinner not included — guide provides recommendations. Allow extra time on Fridays for Accra traffic.

Important Notes

A moderately active day in the Volta highlands — comfortable trail or walking shoes are essential (no sandals or flip flops). The Mount Gemi summit is a gentle ~20-minute climb suitable for most fitness levels, but the walk down to Amedzofe Waterfall involves an uphill return, and the canopy walkway isn't recommended for guests with a serious fear of heights. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, plus a towel and a change of clothes for the waterfall swim. At booking, you'll receive a breakfast menu to pre-select your morning meal — it's collected fresh and served to you in the vehicle. Bananas for the Tafi Atome monkeys are available at the entrance and make the experience unforgettable — we highly recommend picking some up. Dinner is not included.
